According to the August 2004 issue of Harper's
Magazine, African frogs were invading San Francisco and fifteen
Chinese wharehouse workers were crushed to death by an avalanche
of garlic.
Such is life.
I think that today was hands down the most beautiful day I've spent
in Lithuania in a little over 9 months. The temperature was in the
high 60's in the sun, the sky was as blue as Christmas Day in Aspen,
and as the trees begin to turn there was a slight breeze so that
the leaves sparkled in the sunlight. It also turns out, that despite
how small Vilnius is, it acctually IS possible to spend all afternoon
people watching and not see a single person you know.
I filled my backpack with my Dreamweaver book, a couple notebooks,
my newest Harper's and my journal and headed out to Pilies g. to
test how long Presto would let me sit before wanting to clear the
table for the next customers. Turns out a long time because after
two hours over two pots of jasmine flavored green tea, I left without
any pressure from them to leave. It also turns out that Canadian
researchers found that breathing air polluted iwth soot particles
causes genetic damage in mice.
Interesting.
I strolled with my camera across Cathederal Square, where last night
I took in the second half of Puccini's Toska and an excellent fireworks
display, past the National Museum and to the river. Then across
the grass back to Gedimino g. where they were having an arts and
crafts show that felt like being back on the Pearl St. Mall in Boulder.
To celebrate the fabulous indian summer we're having, I bought sashlyk
and what I thought was a hot corn dish but turned out to be some
kind of yello beans on the street. The sashlyk, which is simply
in American terms, pork kebabs without the vegetables, was excellent.
Every last bite litterally melted in my mouth. I was thinking of
my brother Jason the whole time. He would have loved this. Then
I sat on a bench for nearly an hour, just enjoying the sun and watching
a fairly nicely dressed old man eat fried bread he picked up off
the ground.
As late afternoon began to roll into evening, I made my way back
up Pilies g., walking down Vokieciu and back again to the Rotuse
where I found a table in the sun and read about Cascading Style
Sheets in Dreamweaver.
As the days get rapidly shorter, the sunset is now before 7:30,
you can feel we standing on the threashold of winter, but as long
as the sun continues to shine, I'll put on a sweater and sit outside.
We will close on our 6th issue of FHM on Thursday. It's hard to
believe we're half a year in. It's even harder to believe I've been
here for almost a whole year. But on days like today, it's hard
to imagine living anywhere else.
I also want to announce, because I think I've forgotten to do it
many times, my improved website at it's new location. http://jenn.virskus.com/moi
There are lots of pictures there, an archive of my email journals
and links to my favorite websites. Check it out. I've also designed
a website for my brother Jason, http://jason.virskus.com so check
that out too.
I heard that MSU lost to Noter Dame yesterday, I wanted to watch
the game but it came on here at 2 am on the Armed Services channel
or whatever it's called. Hopefully, next week they will play at
a better time for me to watch! Take care and Go Green!
