Olé!

22 August 2004

Just in case you were NOT watching the Olympics tonight... Lithuania BEAT the USA in basketball!!!
That means, that Lithuania wins the group, and the USA MUST beat Angola (not that that should be a problem since Angola is 0-4) in order to even advance.
It's nearly 4:30 in the morning, and I can STILL hear people out celebrating... I'm still in shock, I won't really believe it until I read the news tomorrow. It's simply amazing. Frankly, I thought Lithuania played like they expected to loose, and I think they were a bit lucky to win. Anyway, this wasn't the gold medal game. We're still several games away from that, and we can expect to face the USA again.
I was in tears as the clock went from 5 seconds to 0... I thought for sure there would be a couple more baskets and we would end up so close, but still so far.
When 0 hit, I couldn't even see the tv because the whole bar was on their feat. We hugged, we kissed, champagne was opened, or should I say... Lithuanian sparkling white wine... we cried.
Walking out into the street, everyone was there. They carried Lithuanian flags, they stood out of sunroofs, and they rocked cars as they drove by. They sang, the chanted... Lietuva!!! Lietuva!!! Lietuva!!! ...and somewhere in the distance, I can still hear, "ole, ole ole ole.... ole, ole..."
As I said, it's not over yet, but man we have had a good start!
Also, Lithuania won it's first medal tonight... a silver in the women't hepthalon... Sweden won it's first too (and probably only), the gold.
In all other events, particularly swimming and gymnastics (props to Carly Patterson on the all-around gold), I cheer for the USA and Lithuania.
But in basketball, it's ALL Lithuania!!!
Eina eina!!!
