When Will Winter End

5 March 2004

Since it's been snowing off and on all week, I have little hope that we will see spring before April 1st. I have to say it's more then disappointing!

My week has been rough to say the least. I was out of the office all day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. After our photo shoot on Thursday, I had to go back to the office at 7 and didn't get home until 10! Well, of course I'm not the first to work such long hours, but it sure is a first for me! I'm not sure which I prefer... working long hours at Cosmo, or staying up till 4 am to write my thesis. In the end, I'm sure my work as Cosmo is a lot more successful than my thesis was!
Anyway I'm pretty happy to be at home on the couch with a blanket, a tea and my computer this weekend!

This weekend is the Easter Market in the Old Town. Today Jason and I went. There's all sorts of stuff for sale, nothing really unusual from what you can normally find, just more of it. It's a lot of fun though, if you can stand the people! Jason and I made our way up Piles gatve to the Rotuse, or Town Hall Square with the goal of a pork leg in mind. Marceliukes Kletis, a traditional Lithuanian restaurant, had a barn set up and was selling a selection of their specialties. Yes, that's right, a barn. Not a big one of course, just a replica. Imagine a wooden tent. They had a split rail fence around it and huge piles of wood to heat the grills where they were cooking sashlikas (like shish kebabs but just pork), pork legs and ribs and heating huge vats of beer. Yes, hot beer. Jason and I ordered pork ribs, potato salad and a beer. The pork was amazing. We sat inside the barn to eat. There was a group of maybe 14 people sitting at one table and they started to sing folk songs. We were both moved and said there is nothing like this and how lucky are we to be here at this moment. Later we bought a giant fish cookie and got some hot kvass. Kvass is like beer but made from bread and has only a little alcohol. It was not good. Tomorrow we will go back to buy some special dried flowers it seems you're supposed to get for the season.

I have a long evening on the couch ahead of me... I just watched Charlie's Angels in Russian, now I'm watching Merlin in German! Our photo deadline for April Ieva is quickly approaching, and Cosmo will close on the 17th of March so I have hope for a free day on the weekend when my parents are here.

I don't see anymore skiing in my future for this season, so I'm really really hoping spring will come soon! So that's the news from Vilnius, where all the women wear spike heels, the men have bad haircuts and the children watch cartoons Nickelodeon to learn English!
