A Beef Stew Kind of Day
29 September 2003
It's not even October in Southern California, and
I'm having a Beef Stew Kind of Day.
Late September in Michigan or New England? Sure. Or in Brittany?
It's definitely cold and raining there! In the Rockies? Not out
of the question, it often snows in September. But tell me why, in
Southern California, where it's supposed to always be "70 and
Sunny" am I having a beef stew kind of day!
Let me now say that this is the ninth day in a row of being stuck
in fog so thick, you can't see the ocean 20 meters from our house.
On top of that, it was actually raining, ok misting, but that is
rain in SoCal, all day yesterday!
And on top of that, it's cold! It hasn't gotten above the mid-60's
in days!
Perhaps my brother Joey, Mr. You Won't Need a Sweater Before November
Benny, can answer that!
I will also add that this is probably the first time in my life
I have ever even made beef stew since I didn't eat red meat for
8 years! I'll let you know how it turns out.
Now here's the killer. I MISS fall. I CRAVE fall! We don't really
have fall in Colorado. It's summer, then one weekend in October
the Aspens change, it's all over the news, everyone runs to the
mountains to see it, and by Monday they're all on the ground and
it's winter. What luck I have! This year, I go from the rainiest
and hottest summer in New York in decades to a couple weeks of 70
and sunny followed by endless fog, and then get to drive in the
fog all the way to Michigan where the entire mid-west will most
likely have already plunged into a state of "mostly cloudy
with snow, sleet or rain likely" that will last until April,
however I will board a plane at the end of November for Lithuania
where it will be "mostly cloudy" with %100 chance of snow
and dark by 4pm until April. If you get an email in January begging
you to take me out of my misery, please send a plane ticket to Figi
immediately or I don't know what might happen!
Ok, so what else is new? This past weekend I saw my cousin Lidija
for the first time in 4.5 years when she came to visit for a DAY
when I was living in France! Clearly, that is not nearly enough.
We have both made a promise to work on our cousinship and you may
all bear witness. On top of that, any of you I haven't seen in 4.5
years or maybe more, we should talk soon about what to do about
that!
My mom will be here on Wednesday with Betsey who is feeling MUCH
better thanks to my Dad who has spent countless hours doing major
surgery on her. She is currently in Colorado enjoying the fresh
air and sunshine before pressing on to cold gloomy San Clemente.
She thinks Dad should work for Click and Clack the Tappet brothers
on Cartalk. She's pretty sure they could
use him.
Other news... the recall is apparently going off next Tuesday. I
can't vote, but if I could, I'm pretty sure I'd vote no to the recall,
though I'm sure Davis is a bastard, but the whole thing is such
a circus I can't take it! Do a Goggle search for Gary Coleman and
check out his platform. It's an eye opener.
Well, my beef stew is ready. I'm going to snuggle down in my pajamas
with a nice big bowl and a bottle of wine and watch the second half
of season one of Sex and the City on DVD.
