| The Girl and the
Mountain
7 September 2003
You can take the girl out of the mountains, but
you can't take the mountain out of the girl.
Sitting on the jetty in Dana Point yesterday was almost surreal.
The sheer amount of water in front of us was unbelievable. It was
nearly sunset, and all you could see of the cliff and the surfers
was their silhouette. All of a sudden a seal came swimming up. It
was cool.
I have yet to try surfing, but I don't see myself
as a surfer. First of all, I'm afraid of deep water, particularly
deep ocean water... there's no telling what's gonna come up to nibble
on your toes! Just so everyone can relax.... the woman eaten by
a shark was farther up north, and the sharks the marines have been
seeing from their helicopters are about 15 miles south off the coast
of San Obisbo State Beach... incidentally where the boys surf, but
there haven't been any nibbles so far.
I have become really attached to these boys. I
have only positive things to say about them and love hanging out
with them. Besides my roommates, there is Morgan (the photo asst.)
and Tatou (his friend), Jim (asso. Ed for Bike) and his roommate
Derek (sen. ed. for Powder). These guys are all so fun, laid back,
welcoming and sweet. We had a full house this past weekend as our
new roommate Jeff arrived from Penn with his girlfriend, Camilla
was here for a little vacation, and Matt, a guy that was interning
for Bike a few months ago was back for about a week to reload and
go back on the Heavy Peddle Tour taking Pat, my roommate from Calgary,
with him. They have probably the best job at Primedia Action Sports
Group... they drive all over the country... mostly west... stopping
at bike races, big air comps and Interbike, the trade show in Las
Vegas... giving out free stuff. I was kind of sad to see those guys
leave on Thursday, but we gave them a heck of a going away party
on Wed! They will be back before I leave, at the end of October.
It's quite here this weekend though. Jamey (my
roommate) went up to Downieville, the first stop on the Heavy Peddle
Tour to hang out at the race... I think he just misses Pat and Matt
so much already... Jeff and his girlfriend are in SF and Camilla
is back home in Denver. So I'm hanging out with my neighbor who's
boyfriend is away for the weekend too. Later today we're going to
the Tall Ships Festival at the Harbor in Dana Point and I'm going
to try to get on the press boat to go out and take photos of the
Tall Ships!
Weird (and cool) things I've seen in CA:
A girl walking around Rite-Aid wearing nothing but a string bikini...
not even any flip flops!
The drum circle on Venice Beach.
Everything on Venice beach!
The migrant workers waiting by the donut shop to be picked up for
work every morning.
We have incredible weather here this weekend. It's warm, the water
is warm and there are no clouds in the sky at all. So I think that's
my cue to get off my bum and get outside |
