| Cool, Hot, Tired,
Breathtaking, Clean, Luminous
6 August 2002
My girls are too cool.
For our dance on Saturday, (which was TOO fun, everyone said the
best dance Lac du Bois has ever had, and yes, I was on the planning
team!) my girls all dressed up in insane outfits of each other's
clothes, I even loaned them my Sarah Jessica Parker outfit. Then,
they decided they wanted to dress me up too so I let them. I was
really wearing n'importe quoi (whatever). It was fun though, and
I spent the whole dance dancing with them, they are so fun!
It was SO hot in the dance.
Since there was a vrai risque de pluie (a real risk of rain), we
had the dance inside Paris, our dining hall. Normally it's outside.
But it turned out so well! We hung our disco ball and put up spotlights,
and hung white icicle lights and had black and white triskels and
hermines (celtic symbols of Brittany) hanging all over. We really
went out of our way. And my girls and I tried to include everyone,
particularly getting the shy kids who were sitting by themselves
to dance with us so everyone had a good time.
I am so tired.
I was up till 3 am on Friday getting ready for the dance. The dance
went till 11pm on Saturday and THEN we had a feu de camp (campfire).
I didn't get finished with cabin council until 12:30 and then had
to go do rondes de nuit (night rounds) till 1 and got back to my
cabin at 1:30. At 4:15 one of my 17 year old girls woke me up to
go to the bathroom with her - it's 50 feet from the cabin and there
are lights. We got to sleep in Sunday morning till 10 am but that
was definitely not enough. We went to sleep about 11 last night,
but I'm still in dire need of a nap.
The lake was breathtaking last night.
On sunday night, we have soiree en cabane (evening with the cabin)
and we did canoeing with Nicole, the director, and Etoile, the business
manager, who are both life guards and do not live with other cabins.
So we were nine total and it was incredible. The sky was clear with
the clouds on the horizon reflecting the light to make it purple
and pink all over. The lake was so calm it seemed you could have
walked on it! There were campfires burning throughout camp for cabins
to make smores and the smell of the smoke drifted over the lake.
The sauna was also really going, fortunately, all but one of the
boys cabins bathed so that was fantastic! We circled the two lakes,
going under a little bridge in our canoes. We took pictures and
laughed and relaxed as we floated through the lily pads.
We are clean.
Since we went to sleep at 11 last night, we all got up together
at 8 this morning to take a shower. It was so good. Nice hot showers
and now the whole cabin is clean. Since you can wash in the lake
and take saunas a lot more than you can shower, most of the kids
do that and I had one girl in my cabin who hadn't been in the showers
all week.
The stars are luminous tonight.
I am really lucky because I had the chance to canoe again tonight.
But this time is was a staff canoe trip. So after all the kids went
to bed, we went to the staff house for a fête (party) of brownies
and popcorn, cookies and chips, and then we went canoeing, I went
as the governor (that means I got to steer) with Donatienne, my
friend from Paris. There is NO moon at all tonight, and since we're
in the middle of northern Minni, you can imagine HOW MANY stars
there were. We were canoeing by starlight.
Ahhh..... camp.
It's not all bad. It's just really tiring. I-Day is on Friday. I'll
be up late these next few nights. And I'm leaving early on Sunday
to drive to Houghton, MI way up in the U.P. to see my friend Greg.
I'll sleep maybe next week.
