| Perspective: Wonders
of the World
3 August 2002
Let's face it, Minnesota is probably not the first
place one thinks of when they think of the Wonders of the World.
However, I must say after the spectacular show we got Thursday night,
it should be one of the FIRST places one thinks of!
I'll start by saying that if God was trying to tell me that there
are worse things in the world on Wednesday night with the "grand
orage", on Thursday he showed us that there are also much better
things!
If you're not already wondering what the heck I am talking about,
you should be now! In fact, we saw the Aurora Borealis, the Northern
Lights, on Thursday and it was spectacular. When we first went out
it was about 11:30 and to be honest not that impressive. But as
we continued to watch, until after midnight, it over took up nearly
the whole visible sky. And the most incredible thing is how it continues
to move and change colors, from pink to blue to green and back to
white. And sometimes it even blinks! We are in between two lakes
and one of them, Baby Lake, was SO windy. But on the other side,
Woman Lake was as still as glass. And you could see the reflection
of the stars and the Northern Lights IN the lake! As the sky danced,
twinkled and blinked, so did the lake!
We should have been working Thursday night, but we didn't do a thing.
It was too incredible outside. So that meant that last night we
were up until 3am preparing for today, but it was more than worth
it. For all the annoying things here that go on, the problems between
staff members, the stupidity of some and the snottyness of others,
staying up late to prepare and then being woken up early because
there is a severe storm alert and we have to secure down the cabins
(although in my case that means getting the stuff off the lines
and telling the girls not to leave the cabin), and of course the
BUGS!!!, it is all worth it for the things I have seen here this
summer. We had really great weather two years ago, but we didn't
have this drastic variation in weather and natural phenomenons!
So on one last and very different note, I just want to mention how
WEIRD it is here, I mean the things we do. Every day we have something
during the staff meeting called "Bon pour le moral" Which
is something good for the the moral of the staff. A couple days
ago, we all got up and did the Chicken Dance, or in French, La Dance
de Canard. Yesterday, we did a little dance that goes like this:
Hop along josie hop along (2x)
Turn to the inside
Put your hands on your knees
Clap your hands three times and turn around please!
Skip along josie skip along...................
And so on and so on. It would be absolutely priceless to see the
look on a villager's face if he came to the door at that moment
to see 25 "grown ups" or at the least staff members singing
"Hop along josie". I was a little disturbed myself.
I have only 8 days left here. Tonight is our dance, tomorrow is
our "soiree en cabane", there are certainly mysterious
and bizarre things planned! And Friday is "le grand nettoyage"
meaning we clean camp, have a bar-b-q and sunday morning I am on
my way back to Michigan! There won't be too many emails after this,
so I hope you enjoyed them!
Ciao et à la prochaine! |
