The War on Bugs

22 July 2002

BARE: Bug Abuse Resistance Education

I think I'm winning the war on bugs. I'm wearing 100% Deet and taking three garlic pills a day. It's pure garlic oil in a capsule. The nurse thinks I need at least 3 for it to have an effect. We'll see! At least I don't have to take Benedryl every night anymore!

Camp is pretty good, we got through our first week! Though it seems like it's been a month. I have now one day less than 3 weeks left. I got to go swimming with my girls last night so that was fun, and we had HUGE scary storms yesterday so it's MUCH less humid and was a high of about 65 today so it's SO much better temperature wise! Sleeping is AWESOME now, I insist to the girls that unless it's storming through the windows, they stay open. The breeze is awesome, almost cool enough to wear my Norwegian Socks at night... almost.

But I've got the hang of camp, soon we'll start the preparations for I-Day, or La Journee Internationale! (Allez. allez, allez...) I am chef with Anais, and we're planning to make our camp's theme "Imagine". The theme for the summer is Our World: A Peace Puzzle. So it should be cool. It will be SO much work, but at least we get to go to the Dean's counsel one day in Bemidji and miss camp!

I'm teaching mosaics right now, on Wednesday I'll be teaching canoeing. Then next week, I'll start teaching Toulouse-Lautrec. We'll be making posters in his style for Plasiers d'Amour (the song that my cousin Paul sings is the theme song for the daily soap opera that the monos play for the villagers). So that should be cool. On Saturday, this group leaves, except for the credit students, and on Monday we get about 80 new 13-18 year olds. I'll let you know how THAT goes!

Otherwise, we're up early, going going going all day till we put the kids to bed at 10pm! Yesterday I crashed SO hard at sieste that I woke up 10 minutes late just before the bell rang! My girls said they wanted to wake me up but I was so knocked out they thought I needed my sleep! After cabin counsel and singing the villagers to sleep, we go to the staff house to plan and socialize and de-stress in general. One of the other monos from France had Amélie on DVD so we watched the first part last night and are going to watch the second part tonight. Yes, this is my SIXTH time. But I'm not alone here! I think after I leave we're having a theme day of Amélie Poulain. I am so SAD I will miss it!
